Foundation Statement on Stewardship of Donor-Designated Funds
The South Carolina State University Foundation has a fiduciary duty to protect donor intent, safeguard charitable assets, and comply with all applicable governance and regulatory requirements. While South Carolina State University serves as the Foundation’s administrative gift processor under a Memorandum of Understanding, the Foundation remains a legally independent nonprofit entity solely responsible for the ownership, management, and stewardship of all private gifts made for the benefit of the University.
During a routine internal review, the Foundation identified matters requiring clarification regarding the handling of certain Foundation-designated funds and engaged University leadership to ensure alignment with the governing agreement and established stewardship practices. The matter was addressed promptly and resolved on Friday, January 16. No students were adversely affected.
The Foundation, together with its legal counsel, staff, and Board leadership, continues to work collaboratively with the University to reinforce appropriate stewardship practices. The Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting donor confidence, honoring charitable intent, and upholding the public trust.
