SCSU Foundation Celebrates 35 Years of Giving, over $290,000 in Student Balance Relief for Graduates

Orangeburg, S.C. — January 9, 2026 — The South Carolina State University Foundation delivered a powerful gift of opportunity to graduating students, and the impact was made possible by the generosity of donors supporting the Foundation’s Gala & Tribute, now entering its 35th year as one of the University’s most significant annual fundraising traditions.

In partnership with South Carolina State University, the Foundation conducted a comprehensive evaluation of outstanding financial balances among graduating students. Leveraging funds raised from the Gala & Tribute events, the Foundation provided over $290,000 in targeted financial assistance this year and a total of $500,000 over the past two years. As a result, the Foundation successfully resolved account balances for 70 graduate and undergraduate students, representing approximately 35% of December graduates. This initiative has had a positive impact on graduation rates, which serve as a key indicator for national rankings.

“This is what donor impact looks like,” said Stephen Beatty, Chair of the SCSU Foundation Board of Directors. “Because of our alumni, donors, corporate partners, and friends of the University, especially those who support the annual Gala & Tribute, dozens of students were able to walk across the commencement stage without financial barriers holding them back.”

For 35 years, the Gala & Tribute has served as a cornerstone of the Foundation’s fundraising strategy, fueling scholarships, student success initiatives, and critical investments that strengthen South Carolina State University’s future.

“This year’s graduation impact is a direct reflection of the power of collective giving,” Beatty added. “We invite the public to join us as we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Gala & Tribute and continue expanding opportunities for generations of Bulldogs to come.”

The Foundation’s leadership in stewardship and transparency was recently recognized with a Four-Star rating from Charity Navigator, underscoring its strong fiscal management and mission-driven results.
